THE BEST DIVE OF YOUR LIVE A huge variety of extraordinary dive sites line Belize's coast. The most famous, the Great Blue Hole, is considered the holy grail of dives. An almost perfectly circular sinkhole 1000 feet wide and over 400 feet deep, it's the world's largest, treating adventurous divers to spectacular views of underwater stalactites, stalagmites and columns that date from the last ice age.
And there are so many more adventures to be had. From Tureffe Island and Glovers Reef atolls to the many famous cayes and of course, the largely unexplored and still pristine barrier reef, there are hundreds of phenomenal dive sites to explore, each as distinct as it is outstanding. From gradually sloping ocean floors to astonishing 2,000-foot sheer walls where the ever-changing underwater flora and fauna never cease to enchant, divers can spend weeks in Belize and still see something new each day.
A year-round scuba diving destination and the only English speaking country in Central America, Belize is a unique country with a lot to offer to those seeking a first class diving holiday.
The Belize Barrier Reef is the longest and largest mass of continuous living coral in the Western Hemisphere and second in the world only to Australia's Great Barrier Reef. The UNESCO protected marine site spreads from the northeast tip of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico to Sapodilla Cay southwest of Placencia. There are over 185 miles of unbroken barrier reef in Belize and almost 90 per cent of the countless diving sites remain undiscovered.
Beyond the Great Blue Hole
Although the Great Blue Hole is ranked amongst the top places to dive in the world and one of the most famous dive sites, Belize has many secluded and untouched diving destinations to offer, including:
  • Ambergris Caye – this is one of the most popular attractions for divers because of its easy accessibility to the Lighthouse Reef. Much of the length of the Ambergris Caye is made up of three-dimensional coral formations that include grottoes, canyons and tunnels. Renowned for its wall diving, there is also a five square mile National Underwater Wildlife Sanctuary called Hol Chan Marine Reserve. A must-see for divers, Hol Chan is home to spotted eagle rays, yellowtail snapper, parrotfish and a myriad of other tropical fish.
  • Turneffe Islands – the largest of the three Belizean atolls and the only one with an extensive cover of mangroves, this site is more challenging due to the underwater current and walls. Underwater visibility ranges from 100 to 150 feet and the atoll creates a natural nursery for a wide assortment of exotic fish like the Whitespotted toadfish, an exclusive species to Belize. Eagle rays, turtles, nurse sharks, reef sharks and trunkfish can also be found here.
  • Sergeant's Caye – this is one of the newest dive sites in Belize and is protected by the Turneffe Islands. Dives usually start in shallow waters and drop 70 feet into a descending wall of corals. Sargeant's Caye is a great diving place for less experienced divers.
  • St. George's Caye – sloping walls and a shallow reef with stunning colourful corals and giant sea fans, dives are between 50 feet and 130 feet. Divers are most likely to see dolphins in this spot.
